Different ways to make purchases.
When you’re travelling, you should have multiple ways to pay for things, in case the card you’re using doesn’t work or you run out of cash.
If you prefer to have cash when travelling make sure to visit a Coast Capital branch or call our Advice Centre at 1.888.517.7000 at least 2 weeks before your trip to order foreign currency to avoid any issues. Please note that we don’t keep all foreign currencies on hand at all branches and have limited supplies.

A credit card can be a great way to make larger purchases if you don’t like to carry cash. Plus, depending on the specific features of your credit card, you could benefit from perks like travel insurance or earn BONUSDOLLARS® for any purchase you make.

- You can use your debit card in Canada to make purchases directly from participating merchants.
- As a Coast member, you can access thousands of DING-Free ATMs nationwide. Just look for The Exchange Network or Acculink logos. Using these ATMs can avoid surcharges for cash withdrawals.
- If you use an ATM on another network (i.e. Interac®) in Canada, please note that both Coast Capital and the ATM owner may charge you a fee.
- Make sure you review our fees here to understand what we may charge.
- When you’re travelling internationally, keeping a debit card handy can be a great emergency backup.
- However, please note that there will be additional charges when you withdraw cash from international ATMs or making a merchant Point Of Sale (POS) purchase using your debit card.
- Coast Capital charges $5.00 per international ATM withdrawal and fees ranging up to $5.00 for each international POS transaction depending on your account. You can review our fees here.
- We also charge an International ATM or POS administration fee on international ATM and POS transactions of 2% on the transaction amount. The 'transaction amount' we use to calculate the administration fee is the amount of the POS or ATM request we receive and pay from your account to settle your international ATM or POS transaction. The ATM or POS request we receive is in Canadian dollars. Any currency conversion to calculate the Canadian dollar transaction amount is done by a third party in the electronic network your debit request comes through on. We do not set the rates for or complete those currency conversions. Additional fees or commissions charged by third parties involved in processing your international ATM or POS transaction will also be included in the transaction amount.
